Bibi Club – Washing Machine

Montreal duo Bibi Club release “Washing Machine,” their first English-language single from Amaro, out 27 February via Secret City Records. Adèle Trottier-Rivard and Nicolas Basque wrote the track as a tribute to Tobie, a child who loved watching washing machines spin and rush in every direction.

Trottier-Rivard sings “Where do we go after the death of our child?” while the music refuses to collapse—guitars dance, keyboards pulse, everything keeps moving. The song captures a community gathering outside on the sidewalk, teachers from school, neighbours and friends holding on to each other through tears and laughter. “I will be your mother till the very end” sits at the centre of it all.

Trottier-Rivard calls it “the anomaly”—a song full of light and life despite its underlying grief. It’s a reflection on parenthood and the visceral bonds that connect parents to their children, honouring the short passage on Earth of a child who left a vivid mark on everyone who loved him.

Amaro follows a difficult year for the band—they lost two loved ones recently, and the album works through that grief head-on. Mixed by Seth Manchester, the record pushes into avant-pop and electronic body music zones, blending dark wave and neofolk with baroque touches like harpsichords, trumpets, and ritual chants. Saxophonist and activist Dimitri Milbrun contributes to the album, as does singer-songwriter Helena Deland—two tracks bear their names: “George Sand” and “A Different Light.”

The Polaris-shortlisted duo tours Canada and Europe starting in March, with stops in Montreal, Toronto’s Wavelength Festival, then UK dates in Brighton, Bristol, London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Leeds, plus shows in Paris, Berlin, and other European cities. Recent tours with Blonde Redhead and Circuit des Yeux have informed their evolving sound.
